During Queer History Month, you can join one of our four city walks on the queer history of The Hague, organized by Queer Verhalen Den Haag. You will hear stories from the rich queer history of the court city. Where and how did men meet each other in the 18th century? Where were the gay and queer bars of the 1970s and 1980s? Who fought in the 20th century for legislation to create more equality for queer people? What and who do we commemorate at the International Homomonument at the Koekamp?

Hear the stories of victims of the sodomy persecutions in 1730. Learn about the women and men of colour from The Hague who, 40 years ago, founded their own organizations against racism and queer discrimination. Find out what kind of resistance queer people carried out during World War II. The tour focuses on historical queer stories and also pays attention to places for the queer community today.

In addition to the stories of The Hague, we would also love to hear your stories during the tour! During the walk you will have the chance to share your story with the group, and of course you can also get to know your fellow walkers along the way.

Your guides
The tours are led by guides Marieke Kroneman, lecturer in the Minor Sexuality and Diversity, and Oskar Oonk, queer storyteller and master’s student at the University of Amsterdam in Urban and Architectural History.

Marieke loves to immerse herself in biographies, novels, and stories of brave women and queer characters from The Hague. “During the tour, I share the personal stories of people who have contributed to queer emancipation in The Hague.”

Oskar is a storyteller, urban designer, and urban historian. He focuses on unravelling the queer history of The Hague, with a particular focus on the queer nightlife scene of the 1960s and 1970s.
